Basketball Apparel: Jerseys, Shorts, and Protective Gear
Basketball apparel is simpler than most sports — but there are still choices that matter, especially around fit and comfort during a full game of running.

Jerseys / Shirts
For league play, your team will provide jerseys. For practice and pickup games:
- Moisture-wicking fabric — not cotton. Cotton absorbs sweat and gets heavy. Polyester or performance blends dry fast and stay light.
- Loose fit — basketball requires a full range of arm motion for shooting and passing.
- A basic athletic shirt in the $10–20 range is all you need for practice.
Shorts
Basketball shorts should be:
- Above the knee or just at the knee — too long and they restrict lateral movement
- Loose enough to run and cut freely
- Elastic waistband with a drawstring — so they stay up during sprints
Budget: $10–20 for practice shorts. Game shorts are provided by most leagues.
Compression gear
Optional but increasingly common, especially for older players:
- Compression shorts — worn under basketball shorts. Reduce chafing during long practices.
- Compression sleeves (arm/leg) — provide light support and warmth. Some players feel these help with muscle fatigue.
- Compression shirts — base layer under the jersey. Good for cold gyms.
These are a nice-to-have, not a must-have. Budget: $10–25 per piece.
Protective cups
For boys, a protective cup (athletic cup) is recommended, especially as play gets more physical in middle school and up. A direct impact to the groin during a game is not uncommon — and it only takes once to understand why a cup matters.
- Compression shorts with a built-in cup pocket are the easiest option.
- Standalone cups with a jockstrap work too but are less comfortable for running.
What you can skip
- Headbands and wristbands — purely style, no performance benefit
- Branded everything — your kid does not need Nike head-to-toe to play well
- Expensive practice gear — save the budget for shoes, which actually matter
